A little Boost

[Professional Blog] Where did the summer of 2010 go?

The nights are already getting shorter, and the overnight forecast for the upcoming week is pointing to single digit temperatures. And while I'm holding out that a few nice summer days will come our way before fall arrives on Sept. 22, I expect that the best of summer 2010 is behind us.

In Swift Current, July never boasted a day above 30 Celsius, and there were 13 July days with rain. The hottest day of summer was way back on June 29 when the mercury climbed to 31.7 Celsius, but the month was punctuated by 20 days where some precipitation fell. So far in August, only one day edged above 30, and the long-term forecast is getting us away from the heat.

Weather definitely put a damper on our recreation hours this summer, with people having to battle floods and wet weather, along with some bad hail.

There were also a mosquito or 1,000 to put up with, which also encouraged people to stay indoors. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that most folks spent more time curled up in front of their tvs watching a good movie than drenching themselves with mosquito spray to brave a few more minutes outdoors.

As we approach the mid point of August, we're frankly running out of hours to build that favourite summer memory which helps carry us through the long, chilly winter months.

After all, parents are busy shopping up a storm to fill school supply lists in preparation for the return of school on Aug. 30. Others are already packing away camping gear after summer holidays, knowing they are not likely to get back out now that a busier activity calendar arrives.

However, as hearty Saskatchewan souls, the best advice we can follow is to do what we do every other year - make the best of what mother nature deals us and have fun anyway.
