Too Foolish to Talk About

The big question is, what is going to happen to those wells after the oil is gone. There is just not a well to deal with. Underneath that well is a giant storage tank.Or you might say, a giant empty cave. Because it is empty, it could have a cave- in.  Something like that could create a tidal wave that could cover most of Newfoundland.

But even a tidal wave won't put a damper on Premier Danny Williams’ popularity. Now this is something to wonder about. What has he done since he got in office? Since he got in, the fishery has gone down, and we had lost the paper mill. To make it look good, he got his hands on the mill. And what happened? Now we are stuck with a huge clean up bill.

But worst of all was the death of an outport town, Grand Bruit. A beautiful little place that is gone forever except in the memories of the people who left.

If you turn a blind eye to Williams and look at the past, you can see the it wasn't the Premier who got the money flowing from the oil wells. You give credit where credit is due. And the credit for those wells should go to Peckford, Wells, and Tobin.

And to give the devil his due, Tobin was just like Danny. He loved to be doing something to brighten up his image.

The Premier did fight with Ottawa to get extra money for the oil, but where did that money go? Who got the benefit of it. There was no money for new playgrounds for the kiddies. How much money was allotted to preserve some of those old buildings in the outports. Why didn't they give a couple of hundred thousand to the churches. By doing that, the people would have a place to go to pray for Williams soul.

More jealously from the 'outport crowd'. It isn't all about the outports, St. John's does make up the majority of the province's population and obviously leads the province economically and in every other regard. Why save the dying, pointless subsided fishery where people can work for a week or two and then draw Employment Insurance for the other 50 weeks in a year? All rural Newfoundlanders do is complain about St. John's.
