The group also worked on a public awareness campaign in the area with young people ages 6-12. An information booth was also set up at this year’s MusicFest in the community.
While Ms. Blackwood said turnout for the public awareness events aimed at kids was not always the strongest, they were able to reach out to people.
“They went well, but they just weren’t large groups. It would have been nice to have more participation, but I guess that’s all you can do in a small town.”
In Corner Brook, the team learned about first aid, public presentations, and other skill sets relevant to its work in Glovertown. Those sessions included Green Teams from across Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Corner Brook event also gave the group a chance to hear Clara Hughes speak. The cyclist and speed skater has won Olympic medals at both the summer and winter games.
“That was probably the highlight of Corner Brook. Everyone met up to meet her and get an autograph, and we got to hold her medals,” said Ms. Blackwood.
