The H1N1 influenza is affecting all parts of central Newfoundland that according to the official in charge of pandemic planning and health emergencies.

I believe it is everywhere in every region, but its higher in some and lower in others, said Dr. Ann Roberts, medical officer of health for Central Health, speaking to The Beacon on Wednesday.

In response to this, the health authority has restricted visitation at a number of long-term care homes and in-patient facilities, including those in Gander and New-Wes-Valley.

That is to make sure our patients and our staff are as healthy as possible, she said.

As of yet, she has heard of no reports of previously hospitalized patients becoming affected by H1N1, but Dr. Roberts said some Central Health staff have become ill. However, she cautioned this does not mean affected staff contracted H1N1 from their work environment.

Staff for the health authority are already being vaccinated for H1N1, and an announcement concerning immunization for the general public is expected later this week.
