Megan Pederson tallied twice and added three helpers, as her five-point performance was the difference as Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Western Region earned its first win of the 2010 Atlantic Midget Female Hockey Championships with a 6-4 victory over Hockey Prince Edward Island Western Wind.
Both teams entered the first game of day two action with identical 0-1 records. The win gave Western two points, and, as of now, a share of second place.
Whitney Gaudet, Courtney Noye and Sam Sweet recorded two points each in the loss. Julia Williams was busy for HNL, making 35 saves, while Joanna Palmer turned away 36 for HPEI.
The game was the closest contest of these Atlantics so far, as both teams were deadlocked at 4-4 after 40 minutes of play.
Megan scored a goal in the first and another in the second - her second and third of the tournament - while Franchesca Gibbons and Madison White tallied in the first and second periods respectively for HNL.
Noye scored a single in the first, and another in the second to give her three on the tournament, while Gaudet also added singles in the first and second period for HPEI.
However, Williams turned away all of the shots that came her way in the third period for HNL, and White's second of the game proved to be the eventual game-winning goal. Sarah Blake also scored a single for HNL.
