Hockey Nova Scotia Metro Boston Pizza opened the 2010 Atlantic Midget Female Hockey Championships with an 11-4 win over Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Western Region, March 18.
Alternate captain Alex Normore led the way with a seven-point night for HNS (four goals, three assists), while fellow alternate captain Lindsay James added six points (three goals, three assists). HNL captain Megan Pederson scored a single and added two assists in the loss. HNL starting goalie Julia Williams was replaced by Johanna Elliot eight minutes into the third, and allowed three goals on 10 shots.
Stefannie Moak picked up the win for HNS, stopping 13 of 16 shots she faced. Emma Crawley replaced Moak at the 39-minute mark, and stopped 12 of 13 shots she faced.
James, Normore and Courtney Lund flexed their offensive muscles early in the contest, as James scored twice to give HNS a 2-0 lead with Normore and Lund picking up assists on both goals. HNL, however, tied the game before the first period came to an end, Allie Carew and Kristen Cooze ruffled the twine with singles.
HNS opened the floodgates in the second however, as they scored four times to take a 6-3 lead into the third. Normore scored twice, while Lund and James added singles. Megan Pederson answered for HNL.
HNS scored the opening four goals of the third period, and the route was on. Normore and Lindsay Gray scored two goals each, while Julia Lawrence added a single, and HNS skated its way to a commanding 11-4 win. Cooze scored the lone HNL goal of the period.
