By getting the youth involved now, Ms. Squire hopes it will lead to a time when Friends of the Beaches chapters won’t be needed. Until then, all one has to do is take a garbage bag with them on their walks along the beaches or shorelines. Just contact Ms. Squire beforehand so she can include you in her statistics.
“It instills a sense of ownership and pride in our young people as to what we have. When they grow up, there won’t be anybody littering our beaches, and hopefully we won’t need anybody to clean the beaches,” said Ms. Squire. “As well, parents are seeing the efforts of their children, and hopefully they’ll step in and make some changes as well.”
Official Friends of the Beaches chapters celebrate Earth Day in April, Ocean’s Day in June, and Ocean Net Day in September.
