There’s $2.4 million worth of roadwork expected to be finished by the end of this year’s construction season, with 10 separate projects underway or close to starting.

Topics :
Department of Municipal Affairs , Gander , Magee Road , Johnson Street

Topping the list in dollar figures and scope is the reconstruction of Airport Boulevard. Coun. Allan Scott, chair of the municipal works and services committee, said the work is 50 per cent complete, with hopes of finishing the reconstruction by the end of the month.

“We don’t anticipate business closures,” said Coun. Scott, “but there (will be)  a significant interruption when we go through the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Elizabeth Drive. We have to put a storm sewer pipe in there, so there will be detours and interruptions for traffic going through the main intersection.”

Coun. Scott said the public will be notified when the interruptions are set to occur. Work on the recapping of Airport Boulevard from Morgan Drive to Magee Road should also be finished this summer, he said.

One job that will not be finished in 2010 is the recapping of Johnson Street. Coun. Scott said work on the older section of the street will be deferred until 2011 due to the level of demand for construction work this summer.

“Contractors are very busy,” he said, adding it was a matter of prioritizing what could be done this year.

A holding lane for drivers looking to turn left from Cooper Boulevard on to Raynham Avenue is also on tap for the summer. Coun. Scott said the project would go to tender before the end of August.

The recapping of Rickenbacker Road is set to get underway shortly, with a pre-construction meeting having been scheduled for last week. Coun. Scott said work on the $500,000 project could begin as early as this week.

“Obviously for people getting in and out of driveways, an inconvenience will be there, but no major traffic interruptions as such,” he said of the work scheduled to last 14 weeks.
