Grace Sparkes departs St. Brendans

More than a day-and-a-half after residents of St. Brendan’s stopped the MV Grace Sparkes from leaving the dock in the community, the vessel set sail.

IT’S GONE – Residents of St. Brendan’s stopped their protest Wednesday evening and have allowed the MV Grace Sparkes to leave the island community.

According to Mayor Veronica Broomfield, a public meeting was held Wednesday evening at which it was decided to discontinue the community protest and allow the MV Grace Sparkes to depart the island community in Bonavista Bay.

The protest, which started approximately 7 a.m. on Feb. 19, was to bring notice to the provincial government that residents were not at all pleased with its decision to move the approximate two-year-old MV Grace Sparkes to Bell Island and replace it with the 58-year-old Sound of Islay, while Bell Island’s ferry, the MV Beaumont Hamel, is in refit.
