A woman en route in an aircraft from Miami to Doha gave birth to a bouncing baby boy this morning, or should we say a flying baby boy.

At 4:30 a.m. Gander International Airport was notified of an inbound aircraft from Qatar Airlines. The plane was diverted from its flight path of Miami to Doha in response to a passenger who was in labour.

Two doctors were also on the flight and were able to offer assistance to the woman. The baby was born a half-hour before the flight landed at the airport in Gander.

Brian Hicks, manager of safety and airside operations with the airport authority, said upon arrival of the aircraft they activated emergency response services.

Paramedics from James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre met the aircraft, and the mother and baby were transported to the hospital where both are resting this afternoon.

The flight took on some fuel and continued on to its final destination in Doha.

Hicks was not aware of the nationality of the mother or if anyone else was travelling with her. As for the nationality of the baby, that is a question yet to be answered.
