Second snowmobiler made it safely to shore

A 24-year-old Gander man is in critical condition after his snowmobile broke through the ice at Main Point last night.

Just after midnight on Tuesday members of the Carmanville RCMP Detachment were dispatched to the community where it was believed a snowmobiler had broken though the ice.

Upon arrival, police learned that two men had been operating the snowmobiles near Gander Bay when one broke though the ice. One man managed to make it safely back to shore while the other was still missing.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax was contacted and a Search and Rescue Helicopter was dispatched from Gander for the second man. He was located early this morning by the Search and Rescue Technicians and transported to Gander Hospital. The RCMP investigation is continuing.
