“To make reconstruction work, the process must uphold democracy, restore security and support rule of law,” said Bernice Robertson, the group's senior analyst.
Meanwhile, while the international donors are patting themselves on the back, Haitians would rather have food, shelter and medicine than fancy words. If the rules are in place to please donor countries but actually stop the person in need from receiving the help, what is their use?
Isn’t holding back the money corruption, in and of itself? Not a corruption to pilfer the money, but an intellectual corruption that forgets what this money is for in the first place. Haiti is worse off now in spite of the generosity of the general global public. Isn’t this corruption that involves people’s lives?
Why are we are so careful about theft but not the slightest bit interested when people die waiting for a set of rules? Where did we get this idea that protecting money is more important that protecting people? What is needed is an organization to find out how many people have died waiting for the new money-protection organization.
As for the donor countries setting up the rules to bind the money in more shiny new red tape, there are none so blind as those who will not see.
