The debate we never had

It is a crying shame that the issue of pollution has come down to 'us versus them' - the lunatics versus the scientists, with the lunatics not allowed into the debate. As a consequence, while scientists and global warming activists are agreeing on how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, the real problems, pollution and carbon tax, get lost in the shuffle.

It's like Nero fiddled while Rome burned. Does it matter, except to egos, whether global warming is manmade? While we may not agree that the earth is warming because of fossil fuels, surely we can agree that our little speck in the universe is being polluted by fossil fuels.

The Future Is In Our Past -

Does it all hinge on being right? Scientists, like most humans, put a lot of stock into being first and being right. In this type of one-sided debate, the first causality is always truth. It seems pretty well certain many of us have been manipulated into believing in manmade global warning. The brain insists we keep believing or admit to being brainwashed. Heaven forbid!

The global warming issue reminds me of the Book of Job. God and Satan have a conversation in which God gives Satan permission to tempt Job into cursing God. As the story goes, Job becomes more and more self-righteous (God could never allow Job to be hurt) until God appears in a whirlwind and, in a few sentences, humbles Job by pointing out his ignorance.

In Job Chapter 38, God demonstrates the power of God and the weakness of man, ever so righteous, by asking questions of Job. "Who is the one who dares to speak? Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Did you command the sun to rise?" God's message, "Who do you think you are, Job?"

The idea that man has caused climate change seems to fall into the Job category. Man desperately wishes to believe that he has the power to change natural events. It's not enough to say pollution has a detrimental effect on the health of humans and the planet. Man has to say that human actions are affecting natural events.

According to a movie focused on Inuit knowledge and climate change, shown at the indigenous film festival during the Copenhagen summit, there doesn't seem to be any doubt that Canada's North is warming. The Inuit are experiencing changes in the seasons and experiencing difficulties in carrying on their traditional activities.

Inuit elders say they cannot predict the weather by using the sky anymore. They say, "Our sun doesn't rise where it used to." The Inuit wonder if the world has shifted or tilted North. They believe there may have been changes in the sun, the stars and the position of the earth on it axis.

Like Job, we are woefully ignorant of the workings of the universe; like Job we desperately want to believe that we know everything. People who believe in the Bible shouldn't find fault with God's work. People who don't believe will still have to concede their ignorance and smallness regarding the power of nature.

God told Job that Job had no power over chaos. It's interesting that God responded to Job's questions, demands and provocation by recalling the fact that Job was but a mere mortal. Mere mortals can only do what mere mortals can do. Climate has been changing on earth since its formation. Mere mortals will never change that! But mere mortals can reduce their own pollution.

And that brings me to the reason for the hype on global warming... the imposition of a carbon tax. Carbon tax is a money making scheme. Like derivatives and other worthless paper sold on the stock exchanges, carbon tax will benefit the rich and hurt the poor.

This morning, the street outside my window was jammed with traffic. My inquiry as to the reason for this unusual occurrence brought the response, "The truckers are holding a demonstration against carbon tax." And rightly so!

Truckers use more gas and therefore pollute more, so they'll be taxed accordingly. Think carefully before you answer the question, "Is this fair?" Whose fault is it that truckers use more gas? No one in the governments or industry permitted the development of alternate fuels or transport as long as the oil and car companies controlled the game. Now we are going to let the truckers hold the bag?

In spite of all the hoopla over the past decade, pollution has increased. Taxes will not make a difference. Truckers will still have to move their trucks. The only difference will be the tax. And it is not only truckers who will pay and pay dearly for the latest scheme to remove money from our pockets.

Someone asked me yesterday to put my money where my mouth is and act upon my beliefs by starting an international group to bring about change - a group to listen to skeptics and believers, not just one side. Oh, to be younger, was my first thought! It is a great idea though, and someone must do it for the sake of the future!
