Same old fishing story

The fishery is in a mess again. Now, it was always in a mess. There were good messes and bad. But today, fishermen are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Look at the way it started. This year we haven't got enough ice for a glass of rum and Coke. No ice means no seals. This means that some fishermen can't start off the year making a few dollars on seal pelts. Now, this should make those animal lovers happy.

There is something wrong with those animal lovers. Now, I know a baby whitecoat is a cute animal. I couldn't kill one to save my life. Yes, I love animals, but why interfere with a way of life. The fishermen have to make a living, and they don't kill whitecoats anymore. They kill seals.

Yes, this looks like a snarbuckle of a year. No, the fishermen are not going to get burned, but they could be frozen out of the fishery. When you got a bunch of fools like the ones in the Department of Fools and Oddballs anything can happen. Then add a few fishermen fools, and not even the Lord will interfere.

Look at what is going on now. Wonderful weather and the ocean is flat as a pancake. The perfect time for putting out lump nets. Now, why won't they open the season. You can't catch lumps while on the land. And with weather like this, the lumps are heading for the land. By the time they open the season, in most areas that fish has spawn and have headed out again.

And the fools in Ottawa are rubbing their hands in glee. They less we get to fish, the better they like it

A lot of things that is done, don't make sense. Look at what happened this year. Some of the fishermen who had crab quotas outside have moved in. Now, the inshore fishermen will lose some of their quota, while the ones with the outside quota gain more crab. To me, this is stupid.

I often heard there was a thin line dividing a genius from a fool. The line out on the fishing ground is the same size. I bet, you can plainly see your fellow fisherman on the other side of the line.

According to the DFO, that line is a barricade to the crab as well as the fisherman. The way I see it and a good many more like me, the Department of Fools and Oddballs thinks that a crab respects that line. I say, bull.

Those crab respect no line. They can crawl across the ocean floor, faster than Sid Crosby can cross a hockey rink. Last year, the crabs were scarce in the outer zone. Maybe they all moved into the inner zone. Now this year, the inner zone are allowed less crab. For all we know, those crab might move out. Then what? Demand a licence for the outer zone? I say the DFO is full of plain bull.

A man told me that the fishermen were a bunch of whiners. Once again, I say bull. Now I would have added that other part on, but I don't want to insult the ladies. I admit, the fishermen are whiners, but so are the fish plant workers and the fish plant owners. And you can believe this, just about all workers are whiners.

A fisherman is running a business. He needs money to operate. The price of bait is high and so is the fuel. How can he operate if there is not enough money to cover expense? And keep this in mind. Whenever he goes out there, his life is on the line. Is that worth a fair amount?
