I'm at it again. I've been in the hospital all week, but now I'm back trying to get another column ready. Although the hospital is better than a hotel, it was a long week for me. But I had no choice. My main shaft was labouring to drive the engine in this old carcass. The trouble? Water on the cylinder head casket. That water was coming in to fast and the main shaft couldn't handle it.

It was lucky I had a good doctor - and he is from the outports too. He went to work and got the water siphoned off me. Whew! I'm telling you, it was a close call.

Too foolish to talk about -

I'm at it again. I've been in the hospital all week, but now I'm back trying to get another column ready. Although the hospital is better than a hotel, it was a long week for me. But I had no choice. My main shaft was labouring to drive the engine in this old carcass. The trouble? Water on the cylinder head casket. That water was coming in to fast and the main shaft couldn't handle it.

It was lucky I had a good doctor - and he is from the outports too. He went to work and got the water siphoned off me. Whew! I'm telling you, it was a close call.

They call it a heart attack or heart failure. Now I don't know much about it. I always thought that a heart attack would be painful. But I didn't feel pain. But my chest was tormenting me with this terrible cough. They put me in a room with this elderly gentleman, and my coughing kept him awake. If he had it in this head to kill me, I would have just laid there and took the blow like a man.

Now I've been lucky three times. That fourth one could be the finisher. But I wouldn't mine kicking the bucket, if I could die in the hospital. With all the beautiful nurses there, you can't ask for a better place to pass on.

Why are we sick? I know we were born to die. We can't live forever. Now if God was merciful, He would take us out of the world fast. While I was in that hospital, I was in the room with a gentleman who was a darn good man. He worked hard in his days. Yet, he is not well enough to look after himself. Now, why should he have to suffer like that? It is a lot better for God to look after him to the end, then take him fast.

I said this before, and I'll say it again, most of our illness is self-inflicted. One of our worse acts of self destruction is smoking. Some people smoke worse than a bonfire on Bonfire Night. Not only are smokers killing themselves, they are killing other people as well. I'm a fellow who can speak his mind so I'm going to write this - the government should ban tobacco and tobacco products from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Using drugs is another act of self-destruction. Just think of all the young people who had their lives ruined because of drugs. Some of those young people are smart enough to be the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador or the Prime Minister of Canada. It is heartbreaking to know they give up their future for a few pills and some weed. Shame on those who supply the drugs to our young. They should be all under a death sentence because they are ruining our society. Because of them, the fruit of our future are being turn into worthless weeds.

Do you know that most people are eating themselves to death? We eat far too much worthless food. It might taste good, but is it good for you? Go and get a hamburger from a fast food outlet. Get it tested to find out how good they are for you. I bet you can find more protein in an earthworm than in a hamburger. And those worms are fat free.

But giving up good tasting French Fries and those sweet tasting wedgies is a torture. We're used to it, and now we don't want to part from it. I've already taken one step. I gave up the wedgies. Yep, the day I went into the hospital I had my last plate of wedgies. But if I can lose a hundred pounds, I might have a plate to celebrate.

And if you really want to lose weight, find a way to get into Brookfield Hospital. Their food is non-fatting.

I sincerely hope that Mr. Tulk's health improves quickly. When I lived in Newtown, I recall Bob walking by the United Church manse with his dog in order to get exercise on the branch road. He was always a blessing to our family and the town.
