I was sitting here at my computer, on a blessed Sunday, trying to write. But the darn hockey kept distracting me. I'm starting to wonder, do politicians look at hockey games while they are trying to make decisions? They do just about everything wrong, so something must be distracting them.

Maybe they are all diabetics. That can be bad for taking your mind off things. I'm an expert on diabetics because I am one. My mind makes more turns than a drunken driver.

I often heard people say, "Danny Williams is a smart man." Now that remark always makes me laugh. Are people distracted so much that they don't know a smart man is not a good man? I'd rather have a good man be premier than a smart man. A good man only makes small mistakes. Now look at the latest mistake Premier Williams made. He put on a big show by coming down hard and fast on the paper mill. He took the works, and I heard people say, "He's smart man, Danny is. No one is going to get over his time."

But is he really a smart man? Look at the big debt load that comes with that paper mill. My God, not all the premiers we had, even combined, came up with that big of a debt.

Tom Rideout left the government because of money he got for his district. Some more left the government because of money they got for themselves. Now then, is Premier Millionaire going to go because of this huge debt for the taxpayers? Naaa. Williams is smart. This huge debt could be a good excuse for him to start a casino, and that mill is the right place to have one.

I know it sounds foolish, but keep in mind that there is only a thin line between sane and insane. Williams, and a lot more, might think they're smart, but that doesn't mean they are sane.

Look at Hitler. He was smart but he was also insane. Because he was insane, he got distracted by Russia and was foolish enough to attack that country. The rest is history.

That mill is a high debt for the taxpayers, but government mistakes do cost money. Joey Smallwood spent a fortune on linerboard and rubber boot factories. With the production of rubber boots, he had the right idea. We were, and still are, a rubber boot province. But it was the quality of the product that was the downfall. When you buy a product, you want something to last. Joey's rubber boots were so inferior, you couldn't walk the length of Water Street. Yep, more tax payers' money gone down the drain. But this time I don't know if it was because of distraction or just plain stupidity.

The shutting down of the cod fishery by John Crosby was another event where mistakes were made. There were people who were dead and received a check in the mail. Money was wasted in schools. Some people who couldn't read went back to school and they still can't read. But those mistakes were made by bureaucrats not the government.

Big Bad John was, and still is, a smart man. I can't help but wonder if he didn't get distracted by something. Maybe that woman in Ottawa who he asked to pass that drink, and if he asked for a Newfie drink instead of a Mexican drink, she might have left him alone.

Just about all trouble is caused by distraction. Look at our God. The devil distracted him. Now look at all the trouble we got. We are a bunch of smart people living in an insane world.
