Letter to the editor -
Dear Editor,
Kudos to Glen Blandford, chairman of the Gander Enhancement Committee, for speaking out through the medium of The Beacon, regarding issues surrounding the further beautification of this town. He and his committee are obviously very concerned about certain ongoing (?) projects designed for its enhancement.
Personally, like many other citizens I fear, I have very little insight in the scheduling, work and finances involved in any such programs and/or projects. I leave these issues to the more knowledgably viz., Mr. Blandford and his committee.
However, I wish to address a more mundane aspect of the beautification of the town that has bothered me (and many others) for some time, namely, the mess and filth that "decorate" the sidewalks and streets in front of its business sections and, all to often, even the front of the hospital. Hundreds, if not thousands, of cigarette butts, chip bags, gum wrappers, paper coffee cups, etc..., scattered everywhere. You name it, its there forever and always.
What a mess. What an eyesore for those who have any sense of pride in the beauty of their town, not to mention visitors. Isn't there something that can be done about this? Doesn't the Town have a by-law that directs businesses to keep their storefronts free of such nauseating filth (if it doesn't, it should, many other towns do)?
That aside, don't the business people, etc..., have enough pride in their town and respect for their customers to find some way to eradicate this mess. It really wouldn't cost that much, would it?
Trees, parks, walking trails - by all means. It's all needed and we should encourage such people as Mr. Blandford in their every effort to promote these things. But lets all lower our eyes for a few seconds and take a serious note of the filth that we are required to walk through every day as we go about our business, and demand that for our health and environment's sake, as well as for our town's beauty, something be done to correct it.
