Letter to the editor -
Dear Editor:
It will be sad to see Ron leave the reins to others. Then, it may be time to pass the reins onto someone who will carry the torch high as Mr. Ennis has done for so many years.
I remember Ron when I first started to take an interest in community events at a very young age around Wesleyville in Bonavista Bay. I got to write about Premier Smallwood's town hall campaign meetings, the departure of sealers to take their berth onboard a sealing vessel in St John's. There were many local weddings and deaths that need not go unmentioned.
I was proud to send off my articles to Gander on a piece of scribbler paper to the attention of Editor, Bob Moss. Sometimes, I didn't have a stamp to mail my letter and the postmaster, Cecil Winsor, did so until I got paid for working on the lobsters. There were times when everyone wondered what I was writing till they read it in the Gander Beacon some weeks later. There were articles that never got mailed as someone figured it was all trash. Well, I proved them wrong, I kept on writing.
The community needs a local paper, but the editors must take a greater interest in seeing that the efforts of those who try to pass on a story is appreciated. It's true that I was disappointed in not getting some of my articles published as I thought everything I wrote at such a young age was important and meant a lot to me.
However, I can thank Ron Ennis for giving me many breaks in having my works of writing published across Newfoundland and Labrador. I would encourage others who enjoy writing to share it with your local newspaper. You can share it online as well, but to have that human contact for your community is important.
Good luck Ron.
