Letters to the Editor -
First just let me say, I have the utmost respect for our law enforcement, and God knows we are not perfect - we all make mistakes!
But what happened back a few weeks ago with a 20-year veteran with the RNC, leaving a 40-calibre loaded handgun in an unmarked car unattended.
Now would this fall in the category of unsafe storage?
If we as citizens of this great province own any type of gun it must be properly stored under lock and key, and all ammunition stored away from all guns in a safe place.
This is the gun law, and must be obeyed.
But thank God, the gun was found and 12 bullets recovered shortly after, because this could have been a very different scenario if this loaded gun got into the hands of the wrong people.
I don't want to guess what the outcome may have been. This must have been very embarrassing for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. I don't want to comment on the officer in question, and what should happen to him, I will leave that to the people involved in the investigation.
But now to make matters worse, they just reported a theft of approximately $14,000 right in the RNC building.
Tell me what's going on with the RNC police?
So, now we have a double whammy - the OPP investigating the stolen handgun. The only proper thing to do at this stage of the game is bring in the RCMP, because isn't there an old saying that the RCMP always get their man.
May be its time for a big let and bit of tongue banging by our minister of justice.
Yours truly,
Reg Cooze
