Letter to the editor -
To the citizens of Gander, Newfoundland, Saturday afternoon I was watching the Olympics, sort of over-my-shoulder if you will, as I was involved in a project. As I was working, I noticed the tenor of program had changed. Enough so, that it caused me to stop what I was doing and pay attention to what was being shown.
NBC was dedicating an hour to tell the story of Gander and its citizens, and their generous display of hospitality when 6,500+ unexpected guests showed up for dinner as a result of all air traffic being shut down due to the events of 9/11.
I sat riveted, watching Tom Brokaw as he interviewed many of those involved tell the stories of how the kind and generous people of Gander opened their arms, their businesses and their homes to people they had never met, and would likely never see again. In a world that we often find full of chaos, it is truly inspirational and refreshing to know that there are those who live by the "Golden Rule", and who not only believe, but practice the idea, that we should leave this day just a little bit better than the way we found it. Your unselfish display of generosity eclipsed all borders, cultures and languages. Your message was simple and to the point; How can we help? What is ours, is yours....welcome to Gander!
This American wants to thank, albeit nine years late, the citizens of Gander for being a friendly port during a storm we are yet to fully understand. Not for just for my fellow Americans, but for all those who suddenly found themselves unexpectedly in an unfamiliar place not knowing what tomorrow would bring.
And a final thought; The only thing missing during the Olympics, was seeing the town of Gander on the podium receiving their Gold Medals!
With best regards and great respect,
Gary Hoffman
