Letter to the editor -
Dear Editor,
I have on my mind these days an issue which I feel is a social justice issue - namely the minimum wages and those that are marginally above it.
Dignity in work must absolutely include a just wage that sufficiently supports workers and their families so that they can live a reasonable life. I feel that the present minimum wage and wages that are marginally above it do not accomplish this.
Minimum wage is a poverty wage even for single people, and in families that have one income earner, the situation can be a desperate degree of impoverishment which causes much aguish and pain at times. Are the political and corporate powers of our times seeking a competitive advantage by perpetrating poverty-level wages? You can bet your bones they are.
This has terrible consequences for the worker's rights and fundamental human rights. Minimum wages and those that are marginally above it means minimum dignity for the poor who receive this level of income.
I feel that the government should review the current minimum wage and bring it up to a decent standard whereby workers can be given a decent life that is above impoverishment and with the dignity that everyone deserves to have.
