Dear editor:

I am collecting material for a new book to be published this year called Balcony View. This anthology is focused on Newfoundlanders' memories of the hole in the kitchen ceiling.

Before central heating became common, the hole allowed heat from the kitchen stove to rise to the bedroom. Children gathered around the hole to sneak a peek, especially at night when a party was being held, or a "private" conversation was taking place. They were even known to play pranks on siblings or unsuspecting adults.

Letter to the editor -

Dear editor:

I am collecting material for a new book to be published this year called Balcony View. This anthology is focused on Newfoundlanders' memories of the hole in the kitchen ceiling.

Before central heating became common, the hole allowed heat from the kitchen stove to rise to the bedroom. Children gathered around the hole to sneak a peek, especially at night when a party was being held, or a "private" conversation was taking place. They were even known to play pranks on siblings or unsuspecting adults.

To preserve these memories, I am requesting your readers to send stories and photos for inclusion in the anthology.

A limited edition print of my painting "Balcony View" will be awarded for the best three stories as judged by a panel of writers. As well, each contributor whose story appears in the book will receive a free copy of the collection.

Please send stories by April 30 to Anne M. Galway, 64 Neptune Road, St. John's, A1B 4J3, or email galwayja@nf.sympatico.ca.

Yours truly,

Anne M. Galway
