Letters to the Editor -
Will we learn and heed and be ready if we were to have an oil spill off our east coast, or will we be in for a rude awakening!
I'm sure by now we have all seen the very serious oil spill they have in the Gulf of Mexico, with thousands and thousands of litres of oil pumping out of control and raising to the surface, and as of now no end in sight.
So I'm sure that our government has been keeping a keen eye and paying very much attention on this very serious situation. We can only imagine the catastrophic damage we could have on our hands if a spill like this were to happen in this great province.
The impact on the wildlife alone you could probably only dream about. And if you were to think our fishery is in trouble now, think again. If we had an oil spill of this nature think about the environmental impact. The cost alone would be astronomical.
We must remember, we live in a province where Mother Nature can be very cruel at the best of times, imagine trying to contain an oil spill of this nature in the North Atlantic, in very high winds, tides and currents, deep water waves as high as a three-storey building. Now, try corralling oil in a boom and burning it in those conditions, it would be a very stupid statement to even make.
But thank God nothing has happened yet, when it comes to a large oil spill. So maybe we shouldn't be worried or concerned. But then again it could be just a matter of time.
So now is the time, not later, to take this matter seriously, and start putting measures in place and be somewhat ready for the almost inevitable oil spill of a life time.
Yours truly
