Letters to the Editor -
What kind of Premier stands in the House of Assembly and threatens the People of Newfoundland and Labrador with cuts to social programs and benefits if he doesn't get his own way?
Danny Williams stated that if we do not continue to allow Chevron to drill in deep water, the loss of profits would be felt. "I think the trade-off for that - if we take the billions of dollars that could be lost - would be the loss of social benefits and social programs for the province," Williams said.
What Danny Williams is doing to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador is comparable to extortion. Trying to convince the people of Newfoundland and Labrador that without that oil, we will sink into starvation, and that is nothing less than an idle threat.
Newfoundland and Labrador has survived 60 years without the deepwater wells. To hang our future on deepwater oil now shows what a shallow mind Danny Williams really has.
By going ahead with the drilling, we put our fisheries, tourism, and environment in danger. The billions of dollars those industries would lose and costs for cleanup that would be left to the province if we have an accident would be astronomical.
We should be putting our money into the future: green energy, wind turbines, aquaculture, and renewable resources.
Without the deepwater oil, we can still survive without cutting social programs. Cuts to our social programs and healthcare would bring this province to her knees.
I think for Newfoundland and Labrador's sake, it's time to remove Danny Williams and the members of his think-tank.
