Letter to the editor -
Dear editor,
Currently, there is an effort on Facebook to make Sept. 11 a national holiday in the United States. I cannot think of that mournful day without also remembering Gander's beacon of Light.
A few years ago, I read The Day The World Came To Town by Jim Defede. The book left an indelible impression on me. It moves me to tears to think that an entire community would come together to support and comfort absolute strangers. When the world was at its worst, the people of Gander were at their best. In the midst of unspeakable tragedy, Newfoundland chose to respond with ineffable love.
In 2001, like everyone else, I was transfixed by the apocalyptic images on the television screen. It seemed all hope was gone, except for one shining example of infinite mercy and light - Newfoundland!
All of you did something good, not just in that specific moment in time, but for all time. You set an example for humanity.
People of Gander, NL, you matter!
Pax, Shalom, Namaste.
