Letters to the Editor -
Dear editor,
I am writing this letter to express my feelings about the dispute over donating the playground equipment to Benton. I do hope that you will take time to read my letter thoroughly, and understand my point of view in this situation.
I am a 15-year-old attending St. Paul's Intermediate, but I do understand the concepts and processes of decision making in town council. Frankly, I am quite disturbed with the uncongenial display. I fully agree with Zane Tucker, and I stand at his side in every aspect.
I am originally from Benton, hence, my frustration amid this situation. It is completely true that the equipment that's currently being used is unfit, and truly unsafe. It has been there since my father was born, and he is only one year shy of 50.
I can recall about four years ago when my sister and I were spending some time on the slide. As my sister was climbing the tall ladder to the top, one of the steps flipped, and she fell close from the top. Believe me, she has not been the only one to have an accident on that slide.
I'm sorry to say, but it's things like this that almost makes me ashamed to have left Benton to move to Gander. I lived there for 13 years, and I'm proud to call it home no matter what anyone else has to say. It may be small, but it's filled with the most amazing people you will ever meet, and the great thing is, everyone is family. You could walk down the road for the first time, and end up with fishing trips planned, or an invitation to meet the boys at the cabin.
I'm very disappointed in those who opposed the donation. There may be many people who agree with their view in the situation, but you won't find me, or anyone that I have even interacted with on the same side. I know that each member of council has their own duties and opinions, but this is very inhospitable, and is a situation that has ended with a disgusting display of "scrooges".
I do hope that Zane Tucker will realize that he is admired by many, and that he has really shown hospitality to my hometown. As for Doug Foley, policy is not fair play. Not in this matter.
In conclusion, I would like to thank council for even considering performing an act of kindness to Benton.
Sincerely,
Shaunna Stares
EDITOR'S NOTE: This letter was sent to the Town of Gander, as well as The Beacon.
