‘You can still go,’ he said. He reached in his pocket and threw me a set of keys. ‘Take our car and put your golf clubs in it and go golfing,’ he said. ‘When you are finished come back and your car will be fixed.’ I was dumbfounded at the sincerity and kindness from this man who I had never seen before. To make a long story short, I went golfing, and as I approached the 17th hole, I picked up my cell phone and called the garage. Sure enough, the car was ready to go. I was about to ask the cost when he said, ‘How was your round? Take your time and finish your game.’
At the garage, I was pleasantly surprised with the total and thanked everyone for their hospitality. I still do not think they realize how much this meant to me. It was just another day for them, but a day I will never forget. By the way, it was the best round of golf I ever had. Every year has been the same for my family and me.
I am from Shearstown, Conception Bay, and have always called it God’s Country. I will now count Gander as a close second to my home. To all the people who I have met over these many years coming to Gander, thank you for your kindness, honesty, sincerity and hospitality, but most of all, thank you for your friendship. Please God we will see you next year, and many more years to come.
God bless.
