She insisted that parents should begin to motivate their kid(s) to get active during the summer, too. The way she says it, the more youth are involved with recreational programs, the less likely they’ll get caught up with society’s poisons.
“We’re trying to motivate the parents to motivate the children because the more they get involved and the more confidence they develop, the less they have to rely on the garbage around them like drugs and alcohol,” said Goodyear. “They’ll gain more confidence to stand up for themselves and say, ‘No thanks, I’m not interested.’”
For everybody
Although most people associate summer programs with youth, Goodyear said she wants everybody to get active over the summer months. If everything goes according to plan, this summer will be the first of many where young and old will be enjoying time outdoors, as well as at Beothic Arena.
“We’re coordinating a senior’s program every Tuesday afternoon that consists of a little music, a little exercise, a game of cards and a cup of tea,” she said. “We’ll also have them picked up if they don’t have their own transportation. I want to ask the seniors that will be here on Tuesday afternoons if they would be willing to teach our young people how to cook Newfoundland food. How do we retain our roots and our originality?”
Along with getting people out and getting them physically active, Goodyear is also planning an activity to help those who want to lose weight.
“I have a Biggest Loser contest starting, and there’s a lady from South Brook who’s going to host it. She has about 75 members in a small place like South Brook,” she said. “She has a real good thing going there, so I figured she would be a really motivated person to come in and do that. It’s for anybody who wants to participate. We’re trying to make these programs user friendly.”
Goodyear, along with being the program coordinator at Beothic Arena, is also handling the Crab Festival. To find out more about events like the festival, a September craft fair, as well as a stop by a professional wrestling circuit, contact Goodyear at 536-5883.
