Kelly said his second time around was less stressful than his first, and now that his second go around is over, he said he’s learning how to be a better leader on and off the court.
“You get the nerves out the first time you go, and you fell more relaxed the second time around,” he said. “You get to play in the same age group, and I’m learning new things every year. In the second year, I learned how to be more of a leader.”
In fact, Kelly, who’s academic and athletic future is bright, said he’s already had discussions with a provincial university team.
“I’ve already been talking to the head coach of the MUN (Memorial University of Newfoundland) Seahawks…so there’s always the possibility of playing for them if I go there.”
Both players said they wouldn’t have been able to get to Moncton without local support. Kelly said a number of local businesses helped him financially, while Pinksen said her family members helped with her finances.
Gander’s Scott Holden and Adam Hutchcraft, along with Wesleyville’s Jared Stokes, were members of the provincial U-18 elite team, while Musgrave Harbour’s Leah Whiteway was named to the U-15 developmental female team.
The U-18 squad lost in the bronze-medal match to P.E.I., 29-27, 25-20, and the U-15 developmental team claimed silver in tier two after losing the final to Nova Scotia, 25-21, 26-24.
