Hazlett said the team did however have a goal called back when a ball from another field entered its field of play, and the referee blew the play dead just before the ball entered the Corner Brook net.

Portugal Cove-St Philips won the Division B final.

Gander B winless

Meanwhile, Gander’s second team in the tournament, Gander B, was entered in the qualification round for Divisions E, F and G, kicking off its competition against a familiar foe — Springdale Yellow.

The home side fell behind 3-0 early in the encounter, but bounced back with a pair of markers, one from Devan Edwards and the other from Will Brown, late in the final half to close the gap to 3-2. However, it would be as close as the airport town crew would get, losing 3-2.

In another central Newfoundland match-up, Gander B found itself trailing Exploits 2-0 early in the second half, but Brown’s second of the tournament reduced the margin to 2-1. Once again, a victory wasn’t meant to be for the Gander B squad, as two more from Exploits gave it an insurmountable 4-1 advantage. Jacob Walsh did add to the Gander B total at the 55-minute mark in the 4-2 loss.

The losses placed Gander B in Division F, where it wound up playing eventual championship-game participants Bay Bulls and Lab West. Gander B keep things close in its 2-0 loss to Bay Bulls, but fell 5-1 to Lab West in its final game.

Bay Bulls went on to capture the Division F title, while Stephenville took the E crown, and Clarenville was the Division G champion.

In other divisional gold-medal games, Paradise won in Division C, while Conception Bay North took the Division D trophy.

Hazlett summed up the event, as “awesome” in all regards, right from the players to the organizers to the referees to the supporters.

“This was the biggest tournament this summer in the province, and there were none, if very few, complaints.”
