Subway Central Junior Open serves up an ace

It wasn’t just your ordinary gold-medal singles’ match opponents for Gander’s Hannah Lane and Laura Bailey if they wanted to become double winners at the fourth annual Subway Central Junior Open Tennis Tournament — they had to do it against their respective doubles partners.

In the end, both were successful in making two trips to the gold-medal podium, as Lane captured the girls’ singles and doubles titles in the under-16 age group, while Bailey matched the feat in the girls’ under-14 category.

Lane’s singles victory came at the expense of her doubles’ partner Heather Chaisson by a 6-2, 6-3 margin in the championship match, while she later teamed up with Chaisson to edge Krista and Kayla Gillingham 7-5 in the doubles’ final, completing her sweep of the under-16 girls’ tournament.

Along the way, Lane recorded a default victory over Laura Bailey, as well as a win over Kayla Gillingham in singles action, while her and Chaisson defeated Jane Soucy and Samantha Dwyer in their opening round doubles match. For Chaisson, her trip to the singles’ final included victories over Emily Fraser (default) and Dwyer.

Meanwhile, a similar scenario unfolded in the girls’ under-14 division, as Bailey downed Dwyer 6-3 in the singles’ final, and then joined forces with her to defeat Jessica Dyson and Samantha Dillon 6-0 in the gold-medal doubles’ match.

For Bailey, her singles’ gold-medal trek began with a win over Marina Saad, and followed with a positive decision over Soucy before meeting Dwyer, who was victorious over Clari Ghali and Dyson.

In doubles’ action, the champions received a bye to the second round, where they handed Saad and Ghali a 6-1 loss to advance to the final.
