Rumors have circulated for years about a possible return of Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey to Gander.

The Beacon learned today (April 24) that a group has been setup to further explore that possibility.

Gander native Gary White, a former general manager of the Deer Lake Red Wings, is involved with the group interested in bringing senior hockey back to Gander, and he said they have already received backing from the Town of Gander, and hopes to have a team in place to begin play next season.

According to White, a number of players have already been approached about playing for the Gander club, and many of those players showed interest in playing for the Senior Flyers.

If the move had to happen, the Flyers would join the defending Herder Memorial champion Clarenville Caribous, Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, Corner Brook Royals, Eastlink CeeBee Stars, and the Mount Pearl HJ Bartlett Electric Blades.

The group will meet Thursday night in Gander to discuss its next move.

Pick up the May 3 Beacon for more on the possible return of senior hockey to Gander, and keep checking for updates as they come available.
