It’s an afternoon concert at the Appleton Recreation Centre. The Gander River Boys strike up a lively tune on stage and Freake takes to the floor. She dances a jig with one partner, then when he bows out, another joins in.
Freake says she comes to the Appleton Winterfest every year.
“It’s beautiful. I loves to get out with the crowd,” she said. “You have to get out and enjoy people.”
She likes the card games too, but it can’t beat dancing.
“I loves to dance. That’s the best part of my life.”
Freake sits back down with the crowd when the music stops, but—eyes sparkling—she looks to the stage, waiting for the next fast song to begin.
