GLOVERTOWN, NL – It’s a huge undertaking, but Deon Oram refuses to let Paul, his seven-year-old son, down.

May will mark five years cancer free/in remission for his son. To commemorate the occasion, Oram wanted to do something special.

“I asked him what he wanted for his big celebration – I was thinking a new bike or something like that,” he said. “His response was ‘nothing,’ only to make five children happy.”

Immediately Oram knew what his son was referring to.

Over the past two years Oram has been carrying out fundraising initiatives on behalf of his son to grant requests through the Children’s Wish Foundation for children facing life-threatening medical conditions. Over those two years he has raised $21,505 at his place of employment – Muskrat Falls.

With each wish costing approximately $10,000, he will need to raise $50,000 to make it happen.

“I told Paul that it was a lot of money to raise, but he said, ‘But daddy, you done it before.’ To see the reaction on his face, I couldn’t say no,” he said.

Oram has been working on ideas since the request was made on June 22, and he’s narrowed it down to one massive fundraiser to make it happen.

He’s currently working with dealerships to secure, or at least get a good price on, a pickup truck, quad and a motorcycle for a ticket sale.

He’ll be preparing 7,500 tickets, with a benchmark goal to provide for the five wishes, and depending on the results, perhaps more.

Oram has since started the paperwork to become a member of the Children’s Wish Foundation, and is looking to begin the fundraiser as soon as the prizes are secured.

The draw is expected to take place on the weekend of May 24, which falls on the same month as Paul’s five-year checkup.
