GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL — This Monday night, Dec. 11, offers you a chance to take a break from the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, to sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of Christmas.

The Exploits Jazz Band present their ninth annual Christmas concert at the Gordon Pinsent Centre for the Arts.

Michael and Laura Race are two of the members of the band. Laura, who plays saxophone, and Michael, who is band leader, say the group has been together since 1984.

“There are 18 members, who are from just about every walk of life,” says Laura, “including music teachers and retired music teachers, as well as other non-music professions.”

The band includes trombones, trumpets and a full rhythm section.

Add in vocalist Shauna Matthews — she’s from Gander and has been performing with the band for several years — and you’ve got a great night of jazz offering Christmas favourites as well as some modern selections.

The group has been practicing and preparing for their annual Christmas concert since early fall, getting together twice a week to fine-tune the music.

Show time is 8 p.m. and tickets are currently on sale at the Gordon Pinsent Centre box office. Telephone: (709) 292-4518.
