GLOVERTOWN, NL – Braggs Island is a rocky piece of land on the very edge of Bonavista Bay - about 30km offshore from Glovertown.

This is where Daisy Paul was born.

When she married she moved to Green’s Island with her husband. In those days she would travel to Deer Island four times a day to go to church. Life on the islands was difficult and sometimes awful. In 1939 she and her family followed her father-in-law who moved to Glovertown.

“I didn’t mind it after I got used to it,” Mrs. Paul said in an interview on Saturday, during her birthday celebration.

The many family and friends visiting her at Oram’s Birchview Manor in Glovertown were a testament to just how much community surrounds Daisy Paul. Extended family visited from Alberta, Nova Scotia, the U.S., and elsewhere to be with her for her 100th birthday party.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had a birthday like this, not since I was a child” says Mrs. Paul.

Mrs. Paul’s children were among the guests at Saturday’s event. All three were teachers. Mrs. Paul says it was no trouble at all to be busy once her children left home. She gardened, did housework and worked outside the home in other people’s homes.

She’s not as busy as she used to be but Mrs. Paul did have quite a bit of meeting and greeting to do at her party.

“We’re very happy to celebrate with you,” said her son Vay. “We love you very very very much.”
