Merv Wiseman says there is a need for a broad and formal discussion to find solutions to address issues affecting Newfoundland and Labrador’s rural communities.
One of several individuals seeking the Liberal nomination for the upcoming byelection in the riding of Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, Wiseman is proposing a rural framework that would outline out a vision and proposed action items.
“In the absence of previous entities like the Rural Secretariat and the regional development boards, there is a lack of a formalised rural lens on government decision-making and investment,” he said in a news release Wednesday.
“We need to move on this now by articulating a vision and proposing solutions. By being proactive, we can become shapers of communities and not funeral directors.”
Infrastructure and tourism opportunities can be used to support community development, Wiseman suggested, adding he is committed to rebuilding the fisheries.
“More than anything we need to be looking at the cause of why rural areas are not thriving instead of focusing on the fallout,” he said.
“We need to recommit to rebuilding our rural communities, including rebuilding the fisheries, and a discussion leading to a rural framework would be a good start.”
