MV Legionnaire stepping in for Farewell-Fogo Island-Change Islands run

The MV Legionnaire has a temporary gig lined up while it waits to take over the Bell Island ferry run.

The MV Legionnaire is launched at Damen Shipyards in Romania last year in this file photo.

Sea trials and crew training for the $50 million vessel are nearing completion.

The ferry, which was constructed at Damen Shipyards in Romania and arrived in the province in November, will leave St. John’s harbour on Sunday and replace the sister ship MV Veteran on the Farewell-Fogo Island-Change Islands run starting Tuesday.

The Veteran is scheduled to undergo a two-week planned maintenance. When that ship returns, the Legionnaire will be docked in Lewisporte until it enters service on the Tickle.

The Legionnaire was supposed to take over the route last year.

Construction work to upgrade the wharves at Portugal Cove and Bell Island to accommodate the ferry has taken much longer than was expected, however.

A news release from the provincial government Friday afternoon stated timelines for completion of the upgrades and the Legionnaire’s entry into service for Bell Island are not yet determined.
