Dear Editor:

In the recent lab error being noted at Eastern Health and the Cameron Inquiry still being fresh in our minds, many of us in lab profession are feeling the need to stand up for ourselves and restore the public's trust.

Medical laboratory technologist are highly trained health professionals. To become a registered technologist to practice in Canada, you must complete an accredited medical laboratory program. This is a three-year program that can be completed at the College of the North Atlantic, and then you must complete an extensive day long written exam to be registered with Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science.

Due to shortages of lab technologist in Canada, lab assistant courses are now being offered in the province as well. This program is a nine-month program to help assist the laboratory with the pre-analytic duties. Lab assistants will also be required to be certified by the CSMLS by 2013.

Medical laboratory technologists possess scientific knowledge of the theory, techniques and clinical application of medical laboratory procedures. They understand and apply this knowledge of medical laboratory science to current practice. They ensure continued competence by maintaining their professional skills through professional certification and continuing education.

Medical laboratory professionals are dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the public. The welfare of the patient and respect for the dignity of the individual shall be paramount at all times. Laboratory professionals follow standard operating procedures that are regularly reviewed to ensure patient safety and promote high standards of practice in the delivery of health care.

Laboratory testing has been a very important part to doctor's diagnosis, with many visits to your physician's office you walk away with a laboratory requisition for a battery of tests. Every day, in labs right across the province, medical laboratory professionals make a difference in peoples lives.

Most laboratories in this province are staffed 24 hours day, and are currently working with shortages but are striving to provide the highest quality of care. Please believe in us, and take time to celebrate our contribution to healthcare with National Medical Laboratory Week, April 18-24.
