Another day, and it will be a brand new year. Will it be any better than the last one? Like every other year, there will be good times and bad times. That is what life is all about.

There are times when I wonder what life is all about. Those firm believers in God, say that the Bible predicts everything. Every time something terrible happens, they will say it is written in the Bible.

Too foolish to talk about - Another day, and it will be a brand new year. Will it be any better than the last one? Like every other year, there will be good times and bad times. That is what life is all about.

There are times when I wonder what life is all about. Those firm believers in God, say that the Bible predicts everything. Every time something terrible happens, they will say it is written in the Bible.

But when something terrible happens, the unbelievers will blame it on mankind or nature. Know what I think? I think both groups are close. Years ago, when the Bible was being written, some writers made some predictions. Over the years, it happens, both man made and nature.

If you made predictions, some day they might come true, but if the wait is thousands of years, it will come true.

With the new year coming, I'm thinking about studying the Good Book. Maybe I will find out what is going to happen. Maybe the Federal Minister of Fisheries will read that part in the Bible about the fish in the sea was put there for man use. After reading that, the fishermen might be allowed more cod.

But who knows what is going to happen in the future. We have no way of knowing. The only thing in the Bible which is right, is the phrase, there will be wars and more wars. Now, this is how wars get started. Someone could read it, then go ahead and cause trouble. Why? Because they want to provide proof that the Good Book is right.

What would happen if we get a giant tidal wave in the new year, that would separate the Avalon from the rest of the province. Would Danny Williams say that it was an act of God?

If that happens, it has to be an act of God. But it was only because he wanted to separate the good part from the bad. Now it is up to you to figure out which part is good and which is bad.

Yes, we are heading into a new year and only God knows what is going to happen. One thing that I liked to see happen in the new year is the ban of all those video gambling machine in all the watering holes. Now, if that very important thing was done, some people wouldn't say it was an act of God. They would say it was done because of the foolishness of mankind.

Another thing I want to see done in the very near future is tobacco and cancer sticks banned in the province. It is a crime for the government to allow this on the island. Do they know that tobacco is a deadly weapon? It is more deadly than a gun. A gun can kill quickly. But that darn cancer stick tortures people until they die.

Will there be happiness in the new year? For some, yes, but there is no happiness for some others. For some, it doesn't take much to be happy. Some can find happiness in the simple way of life. Then there are the ones who live just to make other people unhappy.

Look at what's happening to the world. In the cities you must live with locked doors because crime is rampaging. In some countries, pirates are still taking large cargo ships. In other places, bombs are put in places where they explode and kill children and innocent bystanders. Is this a normal way to live?

I know it is a lot to ask for, but in the new year, let us pray, wish, and hope for peace on earth. If we could get rid of those terrible things, it would be part of the recipe for happiness.

Can we have a new year we can count on? Some might say, put your trust in God. I say we should put trust in ourselves, then turn to God and ask him to guide us. It is like my late uncle used to say, God helps those who help themselves.

Here on the northeast coast, we are living in God's country. But how long will it stay that way? Already the whole region is changing. Maybe in the New Year, we might see it changing back to the way it was. You notice, I said maybe. The most we can do is hope and pray.

Happy new year everyone, and may God bestow upon you the blessing of love, health and happiness.

Interesting article Robert..I remember being at a church service in Newtown some years ago, and the minister was preaching the same in his sermon!!

What I found disturbing was that the church doors were closed around home?? I think it was the first time in many years that I was not able to have a quiet moment in my childhood church.

We will never see life as it was around our little paradise,s as people have changed. However, we have to keep close to those we cherish, hoping they will stay with what they grew up with..respect, kindness, love, caring for others, and sharing.

I met with a person who was suffering from cancer recently, and one of the things that bothered her the most was she did not have a close family network, and now she is ill, they don,t seem to care..This is sad, but it is not a reason to giveup in life as oneday her family may be in the same situation and frame of mind. However, those who have a good family network, hold onto it.

Happiness is feeling good about yourself and sharing it with others.

    Happy New Year
