Beauty pageant cancellation does not entitle prize donor to refund, Montague councillor says

MONTAGUE - The cancellation of a beauty pageant here is disappointing but town Councillor Janice MacBeth says but it doesn't entitle a prize donor to seek a refund.
"It's unfortunate that we had to cancel, but we just don't have enough volunteers to pull off as many events as we might like to,'' said MacBeth.
"Every other business that
provided a donation has graciously accepted this turn of
events."
MacBeth, who is working on the upcoming Summer Days festival, was responding to comments levelled by a Main Street businessman last week.
Dylan Lowry was miffed the town wouldn't reimburse his costs after he purchased over $600 worth of tiffany style engraved jewellery as prizes for the contestants.
Lowry, who operates His and Hers and a national mortgage company, said he was promised
a certain amount of advertising and promotion as a prize
donor and sent an invoice to the town.
He didn't know the pageant was cancelled until he called the town hall to inquire.
"I'm offended by what has happened. I lived up to my part of the bargain, but they ignored me,'' he said in an interview earlier this week.
The individual who handled the donation from Lowry is under investigation by the RCMP for alleged town hall thefts and since been fired.
MacBeth says the pageant pickle is unfortunate, but the festival only exists through the work of many volunteers.
"If I donate a fire extinguisher to a benefit and the event is cancelled due to weather I wouldn't send a bill for the fire extinguisher."

Its unlikely the fire extinguisher would cost $600.00, I wonder how many other town councils would like to start some kind of a benefit and gather in some prizes and then because of some excuse or other cancel and keep the prizes, no fire extinguishers by request.

Very Poor business ethics Montague very poor.
How you keep justifying it all is pathetic too. The man just threw away money trying to do a business deal with you and you pulled out and left him holding the bag. Very poor ethics, regardless of how many times you try to say it is not your fault. In my world, your word is your bond, apparently your word means nothing, regardless of what your reasons were for backing out.

You obviously don't have to worry about it if you are not located in montague. The rest of the people commenting like to find something to complain about. If you people live in Montague then volunteer your time to make the summer festival better. If you don't live and pay taxes in Montague, then it is of no concern of yours and maybe you spend your time making your own community better.

First, the dbacle with Mayor McGowan....now this. Once again, Montague has managed to portray their beautiful town in a negative light.

Do those in power not realize the damage they may be creating?

What business owner, in hisher right mind, is going to want to contribute in future community events?

More importantly, what right-thinking business person, is going to want to open a business in Montague

In the future, if Montague wants people and businesses to 'donate', the town should smarten up and be willing to compensate for times like this or nobody or businesses will want to take part in fear of being ripped off.

The old saying goes, 'Make 1 person happy, they tell 3 more, Make 1 person mad, they tell 20 more'.

If I was a business operator in this town, I would never sponsor anything the town is putting on- they cannot honor their end of the participation or their word. They should have been more informative to those willing to sponsor this pageant. This pageant will forever leave a foul taste in the mouth for this town now. This is a disgrace to a town that is already struggling to attract businesses to come there. SHAME ON COUNCIL!

Thank goodness my business is not located in Montague.

As a business that frequently sponsors events, if the City of Charlottetown, did that to me they would never see another penny of support from my business.

Thank goodness Charlottetown has more respect for the business community than Montague does.

As far as the town of Montague goes I wouldn't look for any support any time soon I think you may have burnt your bridges! Poor, poor judgement.

Since Janice Taylor MacBeth joined the
Council, and asked for the portfolio Town
Promotion ,Montague has been the brunt
of sooooo many jokes. This latest fiasco
could have been handled in a professional
way,and both parties would have come away happy.
    Remember,former Mayor McGowan spent
most of last year in hospital and couldn't
    defend herself from C.McBeth's attacks.

    Well it's like this....

Good luck in finding future donations, I know I will never help out after this.

As for the town of Montague its no different from any other small town no matter what you do nothing is good enough. There are to many people who love to spread rumours. Its unlikely the fire extinguisher would cost $600.00, I wonder how many other town councils would like to start some kind of a benefit and gather in some prizes and then because of some excuse or other cancel and keep the prizes, no fire extinguishers by request.
