Dubbed the largest adult volleyball tournament in Canada, the Molson Senior Provincial Championships is set to take place in Central Newfoundland this weekend.

With its largest registration ever, this year’s tournament will have 130 teams in eight divisions that will tier out on Saturday. It is expected to have more than 2,000 participants.

There will be 15 championships crowned, 90 all-stars and 15 MVP’s.

To make it all happen, the games will be spread throughout the Central region – Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Glovertown, Lewisporte, Glenwood, Botwood, Gambo, Gander Bay and Bishop’s Falls.

A championships party will take place in Gander following the tournament.

“We’re very excited about it,” said Russell Jackson, executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association. “It’s something that people mark on their calendar every year.”

Jackson also noted that the tournament will provide a great revenue stream for the area.

“We’re looking at anywhere from $1.5 to $2 million of sport tourism going into the local economy for two to three nights,” he said. “It’s a big influx of dollars.”
