Gander revs up for annual Demolition Derby

Published on August 8, 2017

GANDER, NL — The growling sounds of revving car engines let the crowd know that a fierce battle was about to start in the pit.

It was the annual Demolition Derby, a traditional part of the Gander Festival of Flight activities.
The competition was as fierce on-field as it was off-field with amusing and threatening car decorations.
The winner of the compact class division this past weekend was Spencer Peddle. He  made his
mark by defeating 20 other competitors, and created another record for the event by being
the youngest competitor, at age 17. He plans to be a welder after completing
high school.
In preparation for the event, he says that it is not so fun but at the same time it is. The few
minutes in the pit is the worst, but driving is the best, he said.
There were 18 full size and 21 compact cars at this year’s event, more than last year according to organizers.
