Caribous squeak out win over Caps in interlocking play

Clarenville beats St. John’s 3-2

CLARENVILLE, N.L. — The Clarenville Ford Caribous had their first game against an East Coast Senior Hockey League (ECSHL) team this season Saturday night, when they hosted the St. John’s Caps — emerging with a 3-2 win.

The Caps were first on the board in the first period, however, the ‘Bous were able to knot the game at one with only 27.3 seconds left in the frame. Chad Earle scored the tying goal for the home team.

After a scoreless second period, Clarenville native Andrew Smith broke the deadlock in the third, making it 2-1 Caribous.

But with about seven minutes remaining in the game, the Caps were able to find an equalizer, tying the game once again, 2-2.

Finally, with only minutes remaining in the game, Earle scored his second goal of the night — securing a 3-2 ‘Bous final.

Clarenville outshot their opponents 38-27.

The ‘Bous will play a different ECSHL team Sunday afternoon, as they host the North East Eagles at 1:30 p.m. at the Eastlink Events Centre.

The game will also feature the annual Teddy Toss and food drive.
