CLARENVILLE, N.L. — The Gander Flyers continued their strong play, staying undefeated to start the 2017-18 Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL) season, with a big win over the Clarenville Ford Caribous at the Eastlink Events Centre (EEC) Sunday afternoon.

The Caribous were the first on the board in the opening period, making it 1-0 after seven minutes of play. The goal was scored by Brandon Roach assisted by Keith Delaney and Kevin Reid.

However, the Flyers tied the game six minutes later, with Brandon Hynes scoring the goal assisted by Jordan Escott.

In the second period, Gander took the lead on a two man-advantage powerplay. as Pat O’Keefe made it 2-1 with an assist from Escott.

Before the end of the frame, the Flyers extended their lead with two more goals, bringing it to 4-1. Brandon Hynes scored his second of the game, assisted by Ryan Matheson, while Andrew Ryan also tallied, with a helpers from Brad Power and former ‘Bou Mitch Oake.

Clarenville’s captain Dustin Russell added a goal in the third, from Brad Crann and Josh St. George — but it was too little, too late for the Herd.

The Flyers iced the game with about six minutes left when Escott scored on a two-on-one.

After the final buzzer sounded, despite a last minute snipe from Keith Delaney, Gander had managed to finish off the ‘Bous 6-3 to stay undefeated on the season.

The Caribous will host two different East Coast Senior Hockey League (ECSHL) teams this weekend at the EEC, the Northeast Eagles Saturday night, Dec. 2, and the St. John’s Green Sleeves Caps on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the first place Flyers will travel to Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium for two games against the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.
