While the Giants are better at keeping their guy and the Vikings are betting on keeping theirs, Jones’ overall game fits well in today’s NFL, where great quarterbacks can run the play called and make chicken salad on the fly. Called goes to hell.

That’s why Jones is looking for more than $45 million a year. Even if he doesn’t get it, the request isn’t unreasonable given where the game and the market are headed.

Giants get: TE Darren Waller Raiders get: 2023 third-round pick

Assuming Daniel Jones is back in New York, the Giants figure to prioritize downfield weapons for the young QB. Lacking star power in the veteran WR market, GM Joe Schoen may choose to reallocate their excess cap space to the TE spot, where Waller has risen to become one of the game’s best. Availability has been an issue for the former Pro Bowler lately, so Vegas has reportedly expressed interest in dealing the veteran while rebuilding post-Derek Carr. But New York could use one of its two third-rounders to provide Jones with easily the most effective safety valve of his career.
