Houston rapper dies after collapsing on stage

Houston rapper Big Bokey collapsed during a performance Saturday night in Beaumont, a video circulating on social media showed, and he died Sunday, according to a statement from his publicist.

Big Bogie, whose real name is Milton Powell, was performing at the Pour09 Bar during a Juneteenth-themed event. Powell, who was in his mid-40s, had a microphone in his hand as he suddenly fainted or passed out, falling backwards and landing on his back. It also shows people rushing to him to offer help.

Min Tai, owner of Pour09, said Beaumont police were onsite and able to help “immediately” before emergency responders took Powell to a local hospital.

Powell’s publicist confirmed the death sometime Sunday. In a statement, Powell asked the public to respect the family’s privacy at this time, and information about a celebration of Powell’s life and how the public can pay their respects will be shared at a later date.

“He was well loved by his family, his friends and his loyal fans,” the statement said. “Big Bogie will forever be the ‘toughest pit in the Cubs’!” The statement continued, referring to Powell’s debut album.

Powell was a member Screwed up clickA legendary group of Houston-based rappers teamed up with the late Houston rap legend DJ Screw.

Artists have publicly mourned Powell’s death.

“I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most naturally gifted artists in town. A humble mountain of a man who moved with low key, respect and dignity. He’s easy to love and hard to hate,” fellow rapper Bun P posted on Instagram.
