A student inside the building on the University of Nevada’s Las Vegas campus where the shooting happened said no one was concerned at first when they heard the noise during class.

Brett Johnson was in class on the second floor of the Business Law Building when his professor heard a loud bang and stopped the lecture halfway through — but he said it didn’t sound like a gunshot, so the professor continued teaching.

“Then there was an alarm,” Johnson said. “I’ve never heard an alarm like that before, it didn’t sound like a fire alarm”

Students in the class began packing up relatively quietly, Johnson said.

“When we started leaving the classroom, things got real,” he said.

The look on his professor’s face turned to panic, and he urged the students to come back, lock the door, and get on the floor.

“If a shooter walks into our classroom, we’re all basically sitting ducks,” Johnson said.

After a few minutes, the professor opened the door, checked that it was clear, and instructed the students to run. Johnson said he ran as fast as he could down the stairs of the building.

He said everyone in the complex was running to each other and telling them to evacuate.

“It seems like every guard in Las Vegas is at UNLV,” Johnson said.
